It lies within the knee joint and is about 4cm long, binding the tibia to the femur. The ACL prevents forward slipping of the tibia on the femur and stops hyperextension of the knee. The ACL runs through a special notch in the femur called the intercondylar notch and attaches to a special area of the tibia called the tibial spine.
